Polycarbonate vs Melamine vs Enamel: Which Camping Crockery Actually Lasts?

Walk into any outdoor shop in South Africa and you will be offered melamine or enamel. Those are the two defaults, and both have been sold as camp crockery for decades. Neither is a bad product. But they fail in specific, predictable ways, and if you know what those are before you buy you can avoid replacing a set every second season.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is the material used for safety glazing, machine guards and riot shields. That is not marketing — it is chosen for those jobs because its impact resistance is exceptionally high for a transparent plastic. The same property is why commercial kitchens, airlines and stadium bars use polycarbonate service ware.

What it does well. It survives being dropped onto tile, concrete and campsite gravel. It does not chip at the rim, which is the failure that finishes most other crockery. It is roughly half the weight of the equivalent glass or ceramic, so a full set for four is genuinely portable. Clear polycarbonate stays clear rather than clouding, which is why our tumblers still read as glass after years of use.

What it is worse at. It is a plastic, and no plastic is immune to a steak knife. Cut directly on a polycarbonate plate for long enough and you will mark it. It is also not a cooking material — it goes on the table, not on the fire, which enamel and steel will happily do.

What it costs. More than melamine up front. The argument for it is replacement cycles, not sticker price.

Melamine

Melamine is the default South African camp plate, and for casual use it is perfectly reasonable. It is a thermoset resin, which gives it a hard, glossy surface that feels more like crockery than most plastics do, and it takes colour and pattern well.

Where it goes wrong. Two places. First, that hard surface scratches. Knives, abrasive sponges and grit all mark it, and once the gloss has gone the plate looks tired and holds stains in the scratches. Second, melamine is rigid rather than tough — on a hard enough impact it does not flex, it cracks or chips.

There is also an important safety point that gets missed: melamine should not be microwaved. This is standard guidance from food-safety authorities, not a competitor talking point. Heating melamine dinnerware can cause the resin to break down. If a set is going to be reheated in, check what it is made of first.

Enamel

Enamelware is steel with a glass coating fused onto it. The look is genuinely iconic and for fireside cooking it is unmatched — you can put an enamel mug on coals, which you cannot do with any plastic.

Where it goes wrong. The coating is glass, and glass chips. The moment an enamel mug lands on a rock, a chip appears and bare steel is exposed. That steel then rusts, and the rust spreads under the surrounding enamel. Most enamel camp sets die of rust, not of breakage.

The other issue is heat. Steel conducts heat extremely well, so a mug of boiling coffee becomes genuinely difficult to hold, and the rim is hot against your mouth. Anyone who has made camp coffee in an enamel mug knows the two-minute wait. Our polycarbonate mugs exist largely because of this.

Ceramic

Some people take their normal crockery camping. If you are in a fixed caravan or a cabin and nothing moves much, that is a reasonable call — ceramic is stable in wind because it is heavy, and it feels like eating at home.

Where it goes wrong. It chips at the rim, and a chipped rim is unpleasant to drink from and hard to clean properly. Then it breaks. Broken ceramic at a campsite where people are barefoot is a real problem, not just an inconvenience.

How to actually choose

If you camp two or three times a year and pack carefully, melamine will do the job and cost less.

If you cook on a fire and want gear that can go into the coals, enamel earns its chips. Accept that it is a consumable.

If the set will be used often, by a family, or by anyone who is going to drop things — polycarbonate is the one that survives. It is also the right answer if you want the set to look the same in five years as it does now.

If you are catering or running events, this is not really a debate. Commercial kitchens standardised on polycarbonate because it survives repeated commercial dishwashing and transport between venues.

Yes. Our polycarbonate range is dishwasher safe, which is a requirement of the commercial kitchens it was designed for.

Is melamine safe to microwave?

No. Food-safety guidance is consistent on this: melamine dinnerware should not be used in a microwave, because heating can cause the resin to break down.

What is the difference between polycarbonate and acrylic?

Both are clear plastics. Acrylic has slightly better optical clarity, which is why our stemmed wine glasses are acrylic. Polycarbonate has far higher impact resistance, which is why the plates, bowls and tumblers are polycarbonate.

Will polycarbonate plates go cloudy?

Clear polycarbonate holds its clarity far better than acrylic, which can haze with sun exposure. Any plastic can scratch with abrasive cleaning — skip the steel wool.
