About Camp & Outdoor
Camp & Outdoor sells polycarbonate tableware built for eating outdoors — at a braai, on a campsite, in a caravan, on a boat, or on a stoep in summer.
Where the products come from
We're the retail side of Blue Swallow, a Cape Town company that has designed, manufactured and supplied caterware, displayware and tableware to the South African catering and hospitality trade since 1997.
That's the whole reason this range exists. The plates, bowls, tumblers and mugs we sell here are the same products Blue Swallow supplies to commercial kitchens, function caterers and hospitality venues. They were specified to survive a busy service — stacked wet, run through a commercial dishwasher several times a day, transported between venues in crates.
It turns out that the exact qualities that make tableware survive a catering kitchen also make it survive a campsite.
Why polycarbonate
Most South African camp crockery is melamine or ABS plastic. Ours is polycarbonate, and the difference is worth understanding before you buy.
- Against ceramic: ceramic chips at the rim the first time it meets a rock or a concrete slab, and then it's finished. Polycarbonate doesn't chip.
- Against melamine: melamine scratches with use and goes cloudy and dull. Polycarbonate keeps its surface.
- Against enamel: enamel conducts heat straight through to your fingers and dents, exposing steel that then rusts. Polycarbonate insulates and doesn't dent.
- Against disposables: paper plates blow away, bend under a steak, and you buy them again every trip.
It's also what commercial kitchens and airlines use, for exactly these reasons.
What we actually sell
A complete outdoor table rather than a few odds and ends: plates in five sizes, bowls from 75ml to 1.5L, unbreakable glasses including proper stemmed wine glasses, mugs, cutlery and catering knives, serving platters and trays, and aluminium fold-up tables.
If you're starting from nothing, the bundles are matched sets priced below the individual pieces.
