Camp Kitchen Checklist: What to Pack, How Many, and What It Costs

Most camp kitchen lists are written for backpackers counting grams, or they are a catalogue with everything ticked. This one is for the way most South Africans actually camp: a bakkie or a caravan, a braai, and four people who want to eat properly.
The short answer
For four people you need four of everything you eat off, four of everything you drink from, and one of everything you serve with. That is the whole principle. The list below is what that works out to, and roughly what it costs.
What goes in, per person
Six items each. Everything else on the list is shared.

What you share, not one each
This is where most lists go wrong. You do not need four of these.
- A jug — one 1.2L jug with ice tubes covers a table. The tubes freeze separately so the last glass is not water.
- A serving bowl — one 1.5L square bowl holds a salad for six to eight.
- Condiment bowls — one set of four nesting bowls at R116 rather than R159 separately.
- A board — one bamboo platter that chops and serves.
- Tongs — one serving tong for salad and buffet. Your braai tongs are a different tool.
- A table — one fold-up table. Side-table height for a chair, full height if you want to eat at it.
What to leave at home
Three things people pack that earn no space in a bakkie.
Disposable plates
They blow away, they bend under a steak, and you buy them again every trip. A R71 plate that lasts ten years costs less than paper plates for four people over three weekends.
Your everyday ceramic

More glassware than you will drink from
Two drinking vessels per person is plenty: a tumbler and a mug. Add wine glasses only if you actually drink wine outdoors, and take the 250ml tumbler if you would rather have one thing that does both.
How to pack it

What do I actually need in a camp kitchen?

How many plates do I need for camping?
One dinner plate and one side plate per person. Four people need four of each. Add a couple of spares only if you are cooking for guests; you will wash up before you run out.

Is plastic camping crockery any good?
It depends entirely which plastic. Polycarbonate is what commercial kitchens and airlines use because its impact resistance is very high and it does not chip at the rim. Melamine scratches and dulls with use. The two are not comparable.
