Refund policy

We want you to be happy with what you bought. This page sets out exactly how returns and refunds work, and what your rights are under South African law.

The short version

  • 30 days to request a return if you simply change your mind.
  • Faulty, damaged or wrong item? Contact us immediately and we will make it right at our cost.
  • Always contact us first. We will send you a return shipping label and confirm where to send the parcel. Items sent back without requesting a return first cannot be accepted.
  • Your rights under the Consumer Protection Act and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act apply in addition to everything on this page, and nothing here limits them.

30-day returns

You have 30 days from receiving your order to request a return, for any reason.

To be eligible, the item needs to be:

  • in the same condition you received it, unused and undamaged
  • in its original packaging
  • accompanied by your receipt or proof of purchase

This 30-day window is something we offer voluntarily. It is longer than the law requires, and it sits on top of your statutory rights rather than replacing them.

How to start a return

  1. Email us at info@blueswallow.co.za with your order number and what you would like to return.
  2. We will confirm whether the return is accepted, send you a return shipping label, and tell you exactly where to send the parcel.
  3. Pack the item in its original packaging and send it back using the label we provide.

Please do not send anything back before contacting us. Items returned without an agreed return cannot be accepted, and we may not be able to trace or refund them.

Faulty, damaged or incorrect items

Please inspect your order when it arrives. If an item is defective, damaged in transit, or is not what you ordered, contact us immediately and we will evaluate it and put it right.

For anything that arrives faulty, damaged or incorrect, we cover the cost — the return shipping and the refund or replacement, whichever you prefer.

We also take full responsibility for any order lost, delayed or damaged in transit, and we cover all associated expenses. You do not have to take that up with the courier yourself.

What cannot be returned

Some items cannot be returned under our voluntary 30-day policy:

  • Perishable goods
  • Custom, personalised or special-order items
  • Personal care goods
  • Hazardous materials, flammable liquids and gases
  • Gift cards

Items bought on sale or promotion are not covered by the voluntary 30-day change-of-mind window.

This list does not affect your statutory rights. If any item — including a sale item — is defective, unsafe or not fit for its intended purpose, your rights under the Consumer Protection Act still apply in full.

Your rights under South African law

Two pieces of legislation give you rights that this policy cannot reduce or contract out of.

Seven-day cooling-off period (ECTA section 44)

Because you bought online, section 44 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act gives you the right to cancel your order within seven days of delivery, without giving a reason and without penalty. Where you exercise that right, the law requires the refund to be made within 30 days.

Our 30-day policy above is longer and more generous, so in most cases it is the one you will want to use — but the seven-day statutory right is always available to you.

Six-month warranty on defective goods (CPA section 56)

Under section 56 of the Consumer Protection Act, if goods are defective, unsafe or not fit for their intended purpose, you may return them within six months of delivery and choose whether you want them repaired, replaced or refunded. That choice is yours, not ours, and there is no charge to you for it.

Exchanges

The fastest way to get the item you actually want is to return the one you have and place a new order once the return is accepted. If you would rather we handle it as a straight swap, ask us and we will do what we can.

Refunds

Once we have received and inspected your return, we will let you know whether the refund is approved.

If approved, the refund goes back to your original payment method within 10 business days. Your bank or card issuer may take a few days more to show it on your statement.

If more than 15 business days have passed since we confirmed your refund and you still have not seen it, contact us at info@blueswallow.co.za and we will chase it.

Delivery costs

Where a return is because an item was faulty, damaged or incorrect, we cover the return shipping. For change-of-mind returns we will send you a return label as set out above.

Original delivery charges are refunded where the item was faulty, damaged or incorrect, or where you cancel under the seven-day cooling-off right.
