The difference between a grip tray and an ordinary one becomes obvious the moment you carry four full glasses across uneven ground. A smooth tray lets everything slide the instant the tray tilts; a grip surface holds the base of each glass in place, so the tray can move without the drinks moving on it.

At 385mm it takes a full round of drinks or a tray of canapes, and the raised lip catches anything that does spill. Black hides marks between washes better than any other finish, which is why it's the standard in hospitality.
